Erling Haaland’s Late Goals Propel Norway Past Brazil in World Cup Clash

Haaland’s heroic double stuns Brazil and sends Norway into World Cup quarter-finals

Erling Haaland scores Norway’s second goal against Brazil in the World Cup last 16.

Norway has reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history, thanks to a stunning performance by Erling Haaland. The star striker, who has captivated fans across the globe with his charm and signature cowboy style, netted two decisive goals in the final 11 minutes of the match, marking his sixth and seventh goals of the tournament, and sending Brazil home.

This victory serves as a significant endorsement for coach Ståle Solbakken and his squad, which has been meticulously developed over the past five years. Norway aimed to take control in the first half but struggled to make an impact. A strategic double substitution at halftime changed their approach, allowing them to exploit Brazil’s vulnerabilities on the counterattack.

Haaland proved to be the difference-maker, converting two of his four shots during the encounter. His first goal came with just 11 minutes remaining; a cross from substitute Andreas Schjelderup found him soaring above defender Gabriel Magalhães, delivering a powerful header past goalkeeper Alisson. In injury time, Haaland struck again, calmly finishing a pass from Schjelderup from the edge of the box, celebrated simply with a smile, while his teammates and the Norwegian fans erupted in joy.

The match unfolded as an engaging contest, with Norway buoyed by their recent knockout-stage win and Brazil still in search of cohesion under coach Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti made a tactical change, starting Gabriel Martinelli in place of the injured Lucas Paquetá, positioning the Arsenal winger in a central role with freedom to roam.

In the early moments, Norway came out strong, nearly scoring within three minutes. A swift move initiated by Martin Ødegaard, who created space just outside the box, allowed Julian Ryerson to make a run down the wing. Ødegaard’s precise pass set up Ryerson to square the ball, where Patrick Berg was ready to finish, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Brazil had their own moment of fortune shortly after, as a quick break led to Bruno Guimarães setting up Martinelli, who found Matheus Cunha. A challenge from Kristoffer Ajer brought Cunha down, leading to a review by the video assistant referee, which resulted in a penalty being awarded.

Although many expected Vinícius Júnior to take the spot-kick, it was Guimarães who stepped up. The Newcastle captain, who typically allows Anthony Gordon to take penalties, attempted a stuttering run-up. However, goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland guessed correctly, saving the shot to keep the score level.

The first half then settled into a rhythm of Norwegian ball control and Brazilian counterattacks. Both teams came close to scoring again, with Vinícius and Martinelli forcing saves from Nyland, while Ødegaard nearly capitalized on a chaotic moment in the penalty area, drawing a solid stop from Alisson. Haaland, however, remained less involved during this period.

At halftime, Solbakken made adjustments, substituting both wingers for Oscar Bobb and Schjelderup, which initially allowed Brazil to dominate possession more than in the first half. A key substitution for Brazil saw Endrick replace Cunha, with the young player almost scoring immediately, but his effort went wide after a heavy touch.

As Brazil maintained pressure, Norway found opportunities to counterattack. Alisson was forced to deny two dangerous crosses from Norway, nearly misplaying one into Haaland’s path. Moments later, Haaland showcased his strength, holding off two defenders, but Schjelderup missed a golden chance when he was played into the box.

With Neymar entering the game for Brazil and Guimarães exiting after a commendable performance, the crowd—largely supportive of Brazil—anticipated a potential standout moment from Neymar. He did score a penalty in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but it came too late to alter the outcome, as Haaland had already sealed the victory.
