Enzo Fernández Shines for Argentina Amid Uncertain Chelsea Future

Enzo Fernández shows real quality for Argentina but Chelsea future is up in the air

Enzo Fernández scores Argentina’s equaliser against England

Enzo Fernández showcased a compelling blend of flair and tenacity during Argentina’s victory over England. His initial act in Wednesday’s semi-final in Atlanta involved a fierce challenge on Elliot Anderson, making contact with Manchester City’s recent £116 million acquisition. Although he avoided a booking, he capitalized on some lenient officiating as Argentina regained control after trailing 1-0 early in the second half.

Much has been discussed regarding England’s efforts to maintain their lead. Fans of the Premier League expressed frustration over the lack of disruption to Fernández’s game. While the Chelsea midfielder excels in possession, he sometimes falters when opponents advance past him. This vulnerability has led to tactical issues for Chelsea and could influence their decision to sell him this summer. However, against England, Fernández was allowed the freedom to dictate play during the latter part of the match. Partnering with Alexis Mac Allister, he proved his mettle by equalizing with a stunning long-range shot in the 85th minute.

Fernández seemed to have identified a weakness in the England defense, attempting four shots from distance, with his final one catching Jordan Pickford off guard. England failed to respond to the threat, allowing Fernández to exploit his space. Statistically, he won just three of his nine ground duels but recorded the most touches of any player on the field (104) and achieved a remarkable 98% pass completion rate.

He appeared to enjoy his performance, sharing a lighthearted moment with Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes on his Instagram stories, backed by the tune of ‘Wonderwall.’ This display may not endear him to English fans, but he seems unfazed. Interestingly, Fernández has expressed a keen interest in relocating to Spain. Following a confrontation with Chelsea at the conclusion of last season, which led to a two-match ban, it remains to be seen if his World Cup exploits will prompt Real Madrid to pursue him.

From a scouting perspective, Fernández could not have selected a more opportune opponent for the upcoming final. Real Madrid, having already secured Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer, will undoubtedly monitor his performance against Spain. José Mourinho seeks reinforcements in midfield, an area where Madrid has struggled recently. With Luka Modric and Toni Kroos departing, a creative void has emerged. Despite Madrid’s recent public denial of interest in Fernández, rumors suggest they are still keen on acquiring the Argentine.

Chelsea’s valuation of £120 million is deemed excessive. Additionally, there is a case to be made that Fernández’s international performances should prompt Chelsea to reconsider any potential sale if Madrid comes calling. Xabi Alonso, the latest manager aiming to instill discipline at Stamford Bridge, requires tenacious players. Although Fernández has had his share of struggles, he has thrived internationally while facing turmoil at his club. He appears more comfortable in the Argentina jersey, having stepped up as a leader for his national team, a role he could potentially fulfill under Alonso at Chelsea.

Fernández is a game-changing player. He has become a proficient box-crasher for Chelsea, netting 12 goals last season. His ability to time runs and finish effectively stands out, and he even poses an aerial threat, as demonstrated against Egypt when he headed them out of the tournament in the last 16.

That moment was just one instance of the former Benfica player’s ability to deliver in critical situations for Argentina. His pivotal role in the 2022 World Cup contrasts with his initial absence from the starting lineup. At 21, he awaited Lionel Scaloni’s call. That opportunity arose in a must-win match against Mexico, where he was substituted on in the 57th minute with the score still level. Messi found the net just seven minutes later, and Fernández sealed the victory with a beautiful strike in the 87th minute.

From that point, there was no turning back. Fernández secured a permanent spot in the midfield and was honored as the tournament’s best young player. His rise to prominence led to a transfer to Chelsea for £106.7 million a month after the World Cup final. Yet, his journey has not been without challenges. He faced backlash for being recorded participating in a racist chant about the French team following Argentina’s Copa América triumph in 2024, necessitating a reconciliation with his Chelsea teammates that summer. Fernández later issued an apology during an interview last year.

Will his efforts be sufficient to land him a spot alongside Kylian Mbappé in the Bernabéu dressing room? His performance against Spain’s formidable midfield could be pivotal. Fernández has diligently prepared for this moment, enhancing his physique during his time in England. He is the Argentine player who has logged the most sprints and high-speed runs. However, Rodri, Dani Olmo, and Fabián Ruiz will present a far more significant challenge than Anderson and Declan Rice. Fernández will need to elevate his game once more if he aspires to become a world champion again.
