Fifa has initiated an inquiry into the violent confrontations that erupted following Spain’s victory in the World Cup final on Sunday. Several players from Argentina may face suspensions as a result.
Nahuel Molina was seen apparently striking Spain’s captain, Rodri, in the stomach after entering the pitch at the final whistle. Additionally, a significant altercation occurred near the halfway line, where Leandro Paredes seemingly grabbed Eric García by the throat and then threw Gavi to the ground.
As a consequence of these actions, Paredes received a red card from referee Slavko Vincic, who had already sent Enzo Fernández off late in normal time and issued bookings to three other Argentina players, along with head coach Lionel Scaloni.
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the Fifa World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code (FDC), the Fifa Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,”
Fifa has stated in a release.
In addition to the incidents during the final, Fifa is also examining Argentina’s behavior following their semi-final win against England. After that match, Argentina players celebrated with a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” which had been smuggled into the Atlanta Stadium by fans.
Fifa prohibits any political statements from players or teams, meaning those involved could face bans as a result of this incident.
