Balogun Discusses Controversy Surrounding His Ban Reversal

Folarin Balogun: Ban reversal caused ‘a lot of outside noise, and that’s hard to avoid’

Folarin Balogun, the striker for the United States, has shared his thoughts on how Donald Trump’s involvement in lifting his World Cup suspension was likely to stir up significant debate.

The player, currently with Monaco, received a red card during the United States’ round-of-32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, Fifa’s disciplinary committee later suspended the one-match ban for an entire year, which enabled Balogun to join the team in their last-16 defeat against Belgium.

This decision placed Balogun at the center of controversy, particularly after the human rights organization FairSquare lodged a complaint with the International Olympic Committee. The complaint alleged that Fifa president Gianni Infantino violated political neutrality rules, particularly given Trump’s admission of personal involvement in advocating for Balogun and the U.S. co-hosts.

“cause a lot of controversy” Balogun remarked.

He continued, “My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves, because it’s something that is so unique. “But the closer we got to the game I tried to just focus as best as I could, but it was difficult. A lot of outside noise, and that’s hard to avoid.”

Balogun, who rose through the ranks at Arsenal, maintains that the red card he received for a tackle on Tarik Muharemovic was unwarranted.

“I was in shock. It wasn’t even a tackle. I was totally in shock, I think you could see my reaction, but I just had to accept the decision and just try to be there for my team. “When something’s not intentional it should never be a red card, so it was just an unfortunate situation, and I think it put a lot more pressure on us than we needed.” he explained.

FairSquare has accused Infantino—who became an IOC member in 2020—of repeatedly violating the Olympic Charter and the IOC’s code of ethics, particularly in relation to the handling of Balogun’s case.

Reports indicate that Mohammad Al Kamali, the chair of the disciplinary committee, made the pivotal decision to suspend the ban independently, an action that deviates from the norm in past disciplinary instances.

Fifa has yet to provide any rationale for the suspension of Balogun’s ban.

FairSquare’s complaint outlines five alleged breaches of the IOC’s political neutrality guidelines, along with what it describes as “prima facie” evidence of two additional serious violations concerning the management of Balogun’s situation.

In December, the organization submitted a similar complaint to Fifa’s ethics committee, which acknowledged receipt but has not provided further updates.

Last month, the Norwegian football federation reached out to Fifa’s ethics committee, urging it to review FairSquare’s complaint. Additionally, fifty members of the European Parliament sent a letter on June 29 encouraging the committee to address these concerns.

Fifa and the IOC have been approached for comments regarding these allegations.
