Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan expressed that he considers the incident involving a confrontation with law enforcement in Dallas to be settled. This occurred after he and team director Ibrahim Hassan engaged with a police officer at their hotel.
A video surfaced on Thursday, just a day ahead of Egypt’s match against Australia in the World Cup round of 32, depicting the two arguing with the officer. The dispute seemed to arise over a player’s interaction with a young fan in the hotel lobby.
The interaction escalated when the officer approached Hossam Hassan, leading to a physical altercation with Ibrahim Hassan, who appeared to be displeased with the officer’s involvement.
In response, the Dallas police released a statement indicating that officers had been called to handle a situation involving an individual without credentials attempting to enter the hotel. They confirmed that the situation was resolved on-site, and officials met with Egyptian representatives to discuss their concerns.
Hossam Hassan, speaking through a translator, stated that the team had accepted an apology from the police. He remarked, “We are really happy to be here at this tournament and we are satisfied with the security personnel that are accompanying us,” He also praised the “I would like to point to the high-level organization we have with us and the level of security we have with us.” and security arrangements in place.
Hassan has made history as the first individual to both play and coach for Egypt in the World Cup. Following Egypt’s first knockout stage victory, he celebrated by waving a Palestinian flag on the pitch. “My heart and soul are with them,” he shared in an emotional post-match interview.
“It was the most significant scene,” commented Yahia Qalash, the former head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union, regarding Hassan’s gesture. “It was a telling scene in an exceptional moment.” On Friday, Hassan dedicated the match to the “Flags representing all 211 Fifa member associations are permitted at Fifa tournaments,” people of Egypt and Palestine.
When asked about the display of the Palestinian flag, Fifa confirmed that it is allowed at World Cup events, stating that “flags representing all 211 Fifa member associations are permitted at Fifa tournaments.” There was no indication that any disciplinary measures would be taken against Hassan.
