In a historic match, DR Congo secured a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, marking their first-ever advancement to the World Cup knockout stage. Yoane Wissa’s two goals played a pivotal role in this significant achievement, setting the stage for a clash with England in the next round.
The Uzbeks initially took the lead in Atlanta when Eldor Shomurodov executed a clever lob over goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. However, Wissa quickly equalized from the penalty spot, and Fiston Mayele’s goal ignited celebrations among the predominantly Congolese crowd.
Wissa capped off the memorable evening with a stunning strike during stoppage time, securing his third goal of the tournament.
“We’ll start work immediately on preparing,” stated DRC head coach Sébastien Desabre. “We’ve got a few players in the squad who play at clubs in the English league, so they will help us, but we’ll prepare in the best way we can for what is going to be a very big match for us.”
Uzbekistan entered the match knowing their chances of progressing were slim, given the significant goal difference required. Despite this, legendary Italian player Fabio Cannavaro emphasized the importance of securing a win as a legacy for their inaugural World Cup appearance, motivating his players to start strong.
Nathanaël Mbuku appeared to have equalized for DR Congo with a spectacular shot into the top corner, but a VAR review overturned the goal due to a foul on Sherzod Nasrullaev during the buildup.
As DR Congo struggled to find their rhythm, a reckless tackle by Manchester City’s Abdukodir Khusanov on Wissa provided a lifeline. Wissa calmly converted the penalty, sending the nearly 70,000 fans into a frenzy.
Just two minutes later, the moment the fans had been waiting for arrived. Meschack Elia’s shot deflected just enough for Mayele to sneak in ahead of the goalkeeper and flick the ball into the net.
Wissa then completed the comeback, curling a shot into the far corner from the edge of the area.
“The players gave everything. They are sad in the changing room. They suffer more than anyone in Uzbekistan.” Cannavaro remarked. “The players gave everything. They are sad in the changing room. They suffer more than anyone in Uzbekistan.”
DR Congo’s progression continues to highlight the impressive performance of African teams in this World Cup, with only Tunisia among the ten African nations having been eliminated. Algeria still has a chance to join the eight nations that have advanced to the knockout stage with their upcoming matches.
