Mikel Merino’s Late Goal Sends Portugal and Ronaldo Home from World Cup

The match concluded with a goal from an unexpected source, as Mikel Merino surged through the center-forward position in stoppage time. He latched onto Ferran Torres’s through-ball and, showing remarkable composure in a match that had often lacked it, slotted the decisive strike past Diogo Costa. Celebrating similarly to his previous winner against Germany at the Euros two years prior, Merino mirrored his father’s iconic celebration from 1991, running around the corner flag.

At the other end of the pitch, Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey came to a somber end. As the final whistle blew, he stood in silence, gazing into the distance, a poignant reminder of time catching up with him. While he remains the only player to score in six different World Cups, at 41 years old, his tournament participation has finally concluded.

Ronaldo’s decline has been evident for at least four years, notably since the last-16 match against Switzerland at the Qatar World Cup, where he was benched in favor of Gonçalo Ramos, who scored a hat-trick in a resounding 6-1 victory. To suggest he exited with a flourish would be misleading; in reality, it was a rather muted departure. The sadness is palpable, as Ronaldo’s immense talent should not be overshadowed by the burdens of his ego, which has hindered the potential of what could have been a stellar Portuguese midfield.

Despite Spain advancing to the quarter-finals, the spotlight remained on Ronaldo. His presence loomed large, particularly during his press conference on Sunday, where a mix of banter and a melancholic acceptance of his declining career was evident, tinged with moments of self-pity.

The contrast between Ronaldo and his long-time rival, Lionel Messi, is striking. As Messi has matured, adapting his game to conserve energy and influence play strategically, Ronaldo appears trapped in his past, demanding the ball and showing little versatility. The low point came late in the second half when he failed to capitalize on a break, lacking the pace to push forward and instead opting to pass to a right-back.

His performance included familiar but ineffective antics: slow stepovers that served as reminders of his former brilliance, expressions of frustration directed at teammates and officials, and the occasional hopeful shot. The phenomenon of Ronaldo’s die-hard fans was evident, booing Lamine Yamal and erupting in anger whenever their idol fell down and looked towards the referee, which happened frequently. In these later stages of his career, he increasingly resembles the child whose ball it is, demanding indulgence from others.

Looking beyond Ronaldo, this match showcased two talented midfields, with Spain often gaining the upper hand. The Spanish side appears to be finding its rhythm, particularly with Rodri starting to regain his form from the Euros, displaying a commanding presence reminiscent of a parent playing in a children’s match.

Nuno Mendes had an impressive outing, effectively neutralizing Lamine Yamal and even striking the crossbar with a deflected attempt just before halftime. However, after he was forced off due to an injury while blocking a shot, the Barcelona teenager began to assert more influence on the game. Still, lingering concerns from the group stage remained, as Spain lacked the cutting edge seen during their Euro campaign two years ago. Yamal, possibly affected by his injury, has not been as impactful, and no player has emerged on the left to match the threat posed by Nico Williams.

Ultimately, Spain proved sufficient, advancing to face either the United States or Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday. Meanwhile, Ronaldo, followed by a persistent television camera, trudged down the tunnel, disappearing into the shadows. While the desire to resist the inevitable can be admirable, his farewell came off as disappointingly lackluster.
