Excitement Builds as Geopolitics World Cup Kicks Off in Mexico

Football Daily | World Cup day is upon us: chill, relax and revel in the euphoria and despair

HERE WE GO

Welcome to GWC Day! While the Bigger Cup may dominate the football landscape this century, the launch of a Geopolitics World Cup brings a unique thrill. The 23rd edition commences on Thursday with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa at the iconic Azteca Stadium, a site steeped in World Cup history. Legends Pelé and Diego Maradona both lifted the trophy there, but modern stars like Kylian Mbappé and Cristiano Ronaldo will not have that chance this year, as the final will be held in the USA, a country currently grappling with significant political controversies.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed these issues at a press conference on Wednesday, stating, “We don’t live on the moon, we live on planet Earth,” Remember to take it easy, even if you face challenges today, whether it’s an injury or feeling overlooked in the tournament.

Infantino has indeed set the stage for fans to unwind and immerse themselves in the tournament over the next five weeks. This expansive 48-team competition features 72 group matches, surpassing the total number of matches played in Qatar by eight. Excluding added time and stoppages for factors unrelated to the climate crisis, these matches will offer 108 hours of exhilarating football. For reference, during this time, one could binge-watch every episode of The Sopranos and still have hours left to spare.

The magic of the GWC lies in its ability to captivate audiences, even when those in charge might seem out of touch. While some matches may frustrate viewers with dull outcomes, the tournament will also provide countless moments of joy, surprise, and even heartbreak. These memories are often encapsulated in iconic phrases such as The Hand of God, the Maracanazo, and the Cruyff Turn, which evoke the spirit of past tournaments.

The sheer scale of the GWC presents both challenges and opportunities. New entrants like Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will make their World Cup debuts, while established teams such as Scotland, Haiti, and Iraq return to the international stage after lengthy absences. This diversity promises to inject an element of freshness and nostalgia into the tournament, reminiscent of Euro 2016’s surprising performances. Once these newcomers exit, the competition will intensify as traditional powerhouses, along with unexpected challengers like Senegal and Japan, vie for the prestigious Jules Rimet II trophy.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“We have to respect that we are not kings of the world, who can rule over governments and police forces. We are a sports organisation that does as much as we can. It’s important sometimes to chill, relax. Sometimes screaming and shouting does not find a solution.” – Thierry Henry reacts to the renaming of a street in Manhattan as “I can’t wait to walk around there the next time I go to Rockefeller Center or Radio City Music Hall”, with an intersection in Queens also changed in tribute to Pelé.

FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS

“I see TV companies are now worried about how long half-time entertainment will last at the GWC. Why not just have a concert and halfway through have a 30-minute game of football? The way things are going, that’s what FIFA will probably end up planning for in the future anyway,” – Stephen Kruger.

“Can I be the first of 1,057 to point out that in response to Callum Taylor (yesterday’s Football Daily letters), if there’s one thing the GWC most definitely isn’t short of, it’s moving goalposts. Bottle of water anyone?” – Gordon MacLeod (and no others).
