Erling Haaland Set for World Cup Debut as Norway Faces Iraq

‘The best goalscorer in the world’: Erling Haaland primed for World Cup debut

The site where one legendary footballer’s World Cup journey concluded will now mark the beginning for another. Diego Maradona’s final match on the grandest stage occurred in 1994 when Argentina faced Nigeria at Foxboro Stadium. Now, 32 years later, the venue, renamed Boston Stadium, will host Erling Haaland as he makes his World Cup debut with Norway against Iraq on Tuesday.

This tournament can significantly shape careers. George Best, for instance, is often remembered for never participating in a World Cup. Norway’s head coach, Ståle Solbakken, praised Haaland, stating, “I think he is the world’s best goalscorer,”

Solbakken emphasized the importance of providing Haaland with opportunities, saying, “He is physically fit. I think he has gradually played better and better in training. “He is where he wants to be and hopefully the team can give him the service he needs to get goals. If you give Erling chances, he has a tendency to score,” He also dismissed rumors linking Haaland to Real Madrid, noting, “We haven’t talked about it at all,”

At the training session held just half a mile from the stadium, the presence of the global media reflected the anticipation surrounding Norway’s squad. Tore André Flo, once a prominent striker for Norway, acknowledged Haaland’s record-breaking impact on the game. When asked about who is the superior striker between Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, Flo deftly navigated the question.

However, he confidently stated that this is the most talented group of Norwegian players ever. “It doesn’t interest me and I haven’t heard anything about it.” the former Chelsea player remarked. “If you look at their abilities with the ball, where they play, we have the top scorer in the Premier League and the captain of the team that won the Premier League. So there are some big superstars in this team. There are now more than two. There are lots of players who can positively decide a result. There are threats on the wings, centrally, the opportunities can come from anywhere. Offensively they are very strong. “That applies a bit of pressure but at the same time it is 28 years since we have been here so they have already achieved something that the Norwegian people are happy about. Yes, there is some pressure but there are a lot of other teams with more pressure than Norway.”

Flo elaborated on the squad’s strengths, mentioning, “Every year he is going to a new level,” He acknowledged the pressure that comes with such talent but also pointed out that it has been 28 years since Norway last participated in the World Cup, which has already pleased the nation.

Addressing concerns about whether Haaland might buckle under pressure, Flo asserted, “He has gone from smaller clubs to bigger and huge clubs. He has continued to do well so it doesn’t seem to affect him. I expect he will just keep on going.”

Martin Ødegaard, the Arsenal midfielder, is also pivotal to Norway’s success and Haaland’s goal-scoring chances. Kristoffer Ajer, the Brentford defender, expressed, “I am very happy those players are Norwegian,” Ajer emphasized the team’s confidence, stating, “It is a huge advantage for us to have two players who are among the best in the world. They come here with a lot of confidence and hopefully they can produce the goals and assists we need. They will always get the most attention but I feel like focus has shifted towards the team. We are humble but very confident.”

As the World Cup approaches, many are curious about how Haaland, known for scoring over a goal per game at the international level, will perform. The match against Iraq offers a promising start for his pursuit of the Golden Boot, although challenges from Senegal and France loom ahead.

Solbakken reiterated that he wouldn’t need to motivate his team much, especially after a recent dispute with Scotland over a canceled training match. “Now for me it is good luck to Scotland. I have always supported Scotland as a big Liverpool fan; Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish, Steve Nicol. I didn’t like what happened there but that has been over for a long time now. No hard feelings.” he said. “I needed you for the Champions League,”

Haaland’s preparations for the World Cup included playing golf with childhood friends in Marbella and watching game five of the Stanley Cup final during Norway’s training camp in North Carolina. He confidently predicted that Norway would advance beyond the group stage, potentially surpassing his father, Alf-Inge Haaland.

Alf-Inge was part of the Norway squad that finished last in their group during the 1994 tournament in the US. In a recent YouTube documentary, Erling humorously tried on his father’s jersey from that tournament, quipping, “It’s true they couldn’t win the Champions League until I arrived.” His humor shines through as he reflected on a message from departing teammate Bernardo Silva, who wrote, “I needed you for the Champions League.” Haaland nodded in agreement, stating, “It’s true they couldn’t win the Champions League until I arrived.”

As Norway’s hopes rest on Haaland, the 25-year-old’s already lofty status in football could reach new heights should he seize this opportunity in Massachusetts.
