Iraq Star Aymen Hussein Held for Hours at Chicago Airport Ahead of World Cup

Iraq striker Aymen Hussein questioned for hours on US arrival for World Cup

Aymen Hussein, Iraq’s star striker for the World Cup, was detained and interrogated for almost seven hours upon his arrival at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport early Saturday, according to an official from the Iraqi sports community.

Although Hussein was eventually permitted entry, the team’s photographer was denied access to the United States. This information came from an individual affiliated with the Iraqi Olympic Committee who maintains close ties with the squad.

There has been no immediate response from the Iraqi Football Association, nor from Hussein himself, who is celebrated for netting the decisive goal that secured the team’s place in the finals.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with the Department of Homeland Security, have not yet provided commentary regarding the reported questioning that was also highlighted by Iraqi news outlets.

Supporters gathered at the airport during the early morning hours to welcome the Iraqi team, waving flags and requesting photographs with the players, just days before the tournament begins, as seen in social media videos.

The Iraqi official noted that Hussein’s mobile phone was examined after his arrival.

“National team photographer Talal Salah was held for over 10 hours, underwent similar phone inspections, and was ultimately refused entry into the United States,” the official stated.

This marks Iraq’s return to the World Cup after a 40-year absence since their inaugural appearance.

At 30 years old, Hussein spearheads a formidable attack that includes Ipswich Town’s Ali Al-Hamadi alongside promising young talents Ali Jassim and Youssef Amyn.

In Group I, Iraq will compete against France, Senegal, and Norway.

The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to commence on Thursday.
