Kylian Mbappé’s Brilliance Turns France’s World Cup Opener Around

France looked a disjointed mess in their World Cup opener. Then came Mbappé | Leander Schaerlaeckens

Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé hurried off the pitch after half-time, while the rest of the French squad ambled towards the locker room. The two players, celebrated for their extraordinary skills, had plenty to discuss following a frustrating first half against Senegal.

The match on Tuesday saw the reigning World Cup runners-up struggle against a well-organized Senegalese team, which created more opportunities and even hit the post. Despite their disjointed performance, France managed to secure a 3-1 victory, showcasing the remarkable talent of their forward line, even when they appeared out of sync.

With stars like Mbappé, Dembélé, and Michael Olise, the French team displayed flashes of brilliance but lacked cohesion. Olise’s attempts to influence the game were hindered by his scattered positioning, while Doué found it difficult to make an impact on the left side. Meanwhile, Mbappé and Dembélé struggled to connect, frequently gesturing in frustration at one another.

In the early minutes, an opportunity arose for Mbappé, who received a delivery from Adrien Rabiot, but his control was lacking. The duo exchanged several passes, yet their efforts failed to penetrate Senegal’s defense, which remained relatively untroubled.

In a moment of promise, Olise cut through Senegal’s defense late in the first half but miscommunication with Mbappé led to another missed chance. The French attack appeared disjointed, lacking the synergy expected from such talented players, leaving them searching for solutions.

As Senegal pressed forward, they caught the French defense off guard, with Nicolas Jackson testing goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Frustration in the press box grew as Mbappé’s turnovers mounted, prompting one journalist to lament, “From time to time, you do have a rough start,”

“It’s quite hard to meet the high expectation at a World Cup.” said French coach Didier Deschamps. “He told me that he didn’t want to strike in a friendly match but wanted to score in a real match,”

Deschamps’ halftime adjustments proved effective. Switching Olise to a central role and moving Dembélé to the right ignited a spark in the French side, who began to find their rhythm shortly after the hour mark.

Both Olise and Mbappé were denied by Senegal’s goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, while a potential penalty for a foul on Mbappé went uncalled despite VAR’s intervention. Nevertheless, in the 64th minute, Olise found Mbappé with an incisive pass, marking the beginning of France’s resurgence.

Just two minutes later, the pair connected again, with Olise delivering a perfectly weighted ball that allowed Mbappé to score, tying him with Olivier Giroud’s all-time France record of 57 goals.

Following an offside call on Jackson’s goal, Rabiot orchestrated a break that saw substitute Bradley Barcola finish with finesse. Senegal managed to score through Ibrahim Mbaye, but Olise and Mbappé were not done yet.

In a thrilling conclusion, Olise navigated through defenders to set up Mbappé, who unleashed a stunning shot from distance that sealed the match at 3-1, bringing his international goal tally to 58.

Deschamps humorously recounted Mbappé’s determination to score in a competitive setting, noting, “Kylian was efficient, ruthlessly efficient,”

While this game may not be remembered fondly by the French squad, it highlighted the potential within the team. Senegal performed admirably, yet the talents of Mbappé, Olise, and Dembélé provided France with a significant cushion for error.

Deschamps praised Mbappé’s performance, stating, “People will still criticize him. He’s an iconic player, I’ve always said that. He can sometimes miss a game but on one action he can really tip the scales.”

With the match concluded, smiles replaced earlier frustrations as Mbappé led his teammates to acknowledge the support of their fans. The earlier struggles faded into memory, replaced by the promise of what this team can achieve.

The French team can look forward with confidence, buoyed by the remarkable talent at their disposal.
