Socceroos Criticize Referee Following 2-0 Loss to USA in World Cup

Socceroos aggrieved by referee’s ‘stinker’ in World Cup defeat to USA

Following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to the United States in a World Cup match held in Seattle, the Socceroos have expressed their frustration over referee Felix Zwayer’s performance, labeling it a “If you look at how the referee was today, [there’s] not much I can say about that,” Players felt the officiating was marred by a series of questionable decisions that impacted the game’s outcome.

The second goal scored by the US was particularly contentious, as it was awarded by the video assistant referee amidst concerns of an offside player interfering with goalkeeper Patrick Beach as he attempted to recover from a deflected shot.

However, the Socceroos were more vocal about the numerous non-calls they believed occurred throughout the match. They cited instances where Connor Metcalfe seemed to be fouled in the penalty area, and Nestory Irankunda was taken down off the ball by American defender Chris Richards, among other overlooked infractions.

Irankunda reflected on the match, stating, “The ref was having a stinker today, but I mean it is what it is,” He further elaborated, saying, “He was giving every call to the USA. I get it, but at the same time, we know there’s two teams on the field, so you have to give the calls both ways and he didn’t do that today.”

Coach Tony Popovic remarked on the match’s physicality, asserting that it was not excessively aggressive, yet found the officiating inconsistent. He noted, “I thought the referee gave too many fouls away, in all honesty, he said. “Sometimes you didn’t have to do much to win a foul, and on the other occasions you you had to do a fair bit to get one.”

Despite the defeat, the Socceroos remain optimistic about their World Cup campaign, believing they can turn things around quickly.

Australia trailed 2-0 at halftime, having been outperformed in the first half. The match, played in front of 68,000 spectators at Seattle Stadium, secured the US a place in the knockout stage, later confirmed as they topped Group D after Paraguay’s victory over Turkey. For Australia, their chances now hinge on their upcoming group-stage match against Paraguay in San Francisco, where a win or draw would ensure qualification for the next round. However, a loss could jeopardize their hopes of advancing to the last 32.

Captain Harry Souttar, visibly disappointed after the match, acknowledged the frustration but emphasized the team’s potential to move forward. “[The reaction] has got to be a positive one tomorrow,” he stated. “We can look back at the game properly and take bits that we did well and that we didn’t do well – there’s a lot of them.”

He added, “We’re in that position where we know we can go through, if we get a result. So yeah, full focus and positivity has got to be [there] for that last game,”

While the Socceroos improved their performance in the second half, they could not capitalize against a determined and composed US team.

Souttar noted, “We didn’t start well enough,”

Cristian Volpato

Substitutes Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, who scored against Turkey last week, made an impression after coming on during halftime, along with Cristian Volpato, who made his World Cup debut.

Midfielder Aiden O’Neill stated that the Socceroos continue to believe in their chances, taking positives from their second-half performance as they prepare for the clash against Paraguay. He noted Volpato’s significant impact, along with the other substitutes, which contributed to a spirited effort in the match.

“They were in our faces, we couldn’t keep the ball down, we were always trying to get in behind early, we just didn’t really show that composure that I think you think you needed. But the reaction was good.” O’Neill commented. “The boss always talks about the belief in the squad and I think maybe in the second half we really truly believed that we would get back into it,”

Popovic struggled to explain the team’s lackluster first-half showing, saying, “Maybe you could see that on the field, and we gave everything. I think everyone can see that.”

He praised the second-half response as “I don’t know if it’s the occasion, but we looked sluggish, heavy legged, dull,” highlighting it as a foundation for their next match.

“They won every duel, they won every second ball and when you do that, it makes it very difficult to get any, gain any momentum.” Popovic said. “We’ve got to accept what happened today, and I’m really delighted with the second half, to be honest, with all the players that came on, and the players that didn’t have a good first half,”
