US Players Embrace Zlatan’s Belief in World Cup Success: ‘That’s Our Mindset’

US players agree with Zlatan Ibrahimovic that World Cup title is possible: ‘That’s our mindset’

Following two victories in their World Cup campaign, the United States team has gained a prominent advocate in Zlatan Ibrahimovic. During a postgame segment on Fox, when asked if the co-hosts could secure the World Cup title, the Swedish star responded succinctly: “I don’t think it’s ridiculous,”

In the aftermath of their 2-0 triumph over Australia on Friday, US players echoed a positive sentiment regarding Ibrahimovic’s words. Their unified stance? Absolutely, why not pursue victory?

Chris Richards expressed confidence, stating, “We want to lift a trophy by the end of this.”

Auston Trusty, another defender, shared a similar perspective.

“I don’t think you enter this tournament not to have that mindset. To have [Ibrahimovic] say that about us, that’s amazing. But I’m sure he knows as well, it’s game-by-game.” Trusty remarked. “I think you dream of this moment,”

Should the US advance further in the tournament, Friday’s victory ensured their place in the knockout stage, much of the credit will likely go to Alex Freeman. The 21-year-old defender, who currently plays for Villarreal after a standout tenure with Orlando City in MLS, has emerged as a key player at this World Cup. Freeman, stationed on the right side of a three-man defense, netted the second goal that secured the win, a score initially disallowed for offside but later confirmed after a lengthy VAR review.

“And for it to finally happen with such a support system to help you celebrate it makes is so much more special. When it was confirmed, I saw all my teammates running and I thought: ‘I’ve got to run away, they’re going to tackle me!’” said Freeman, the son of Super Bowl champion Antonio Freeman. “The evolution is massive,”

Mauricio Pochettino, who stated his ambition to lead the US to a World Cup victory during his introductory press conference as head coach, praised not only Freeman but also the developmental system that nurtured him.

“He has potential to be one of the best players in his position in the world. He’s [a] humble guy, he has an amazing profile. He wants to learn. He always listens … you really enjoy being with him.” Pochettino commented after the match on Friday. “He has the potential to be one of the best players in his position in the world. He’s [a] humble guy, he has an amazing profile. He wants to learn. He always listens … you really enjoy being with him.”

The United States achieved its best finish in a men’s World Cup during the inaugural tournament in 1930, where they placed third. Their most notable performance in recent history was reaching the quarter-finals in 2002.
