Gianni Infantino has announced that Donald Trump will present the World Cup trophy to the victorious team during the final held on July 19. This event marks a significant moment in the tournament, which commenced on June 11.
Infantino and Trump have built a strong rapport leading up to these finals. Despite this close association, the U.S. president has largely remained quiet regarding the tournament’s progress.
In a recent interview with Fox and Friends, the FIFA president confirmed that Trump will take a prominent role in the trophy presentation ceremony at the New York New Jersey Stadium, similar to his appearance at last year’s Club World Cup final, where Chelsea emerged as the champion.
“We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course,” Infantino stated.
When asked if they would jointly present the trophy, Infantino responded affirmatively, saying, “Of course, we are together all the time.”
During last year’s Club World Cup final, Trump lingered on the podium after presenting the trophy to Chelsea’s Reece James.
“They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay,” James recounted after the event.
James also noted that Trump congratulated the team on their achievement, adding, “To be honest it was quite loud. I couldn’t hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”
Meanwhile, Cole Palmer, who scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain, expressed his surprise at the situation. He remarked, “I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yes.”
