Iran Holds Belgium to Draw as Nathan Ngoy Sent Off in World Cup Clash

Iran frustrate 10-man Belgium in World Cup stalemate as Nathan Ngoy sees red

The defining moment of the match came when Iran’s Alireza Beiranvand executed a breathtaking save, preventing Belgium from taking the lead just before the hour mark. This remarkable feat may become a cherished memory for Iran, especially if they manage to advance to the knockout stage for the first time. The save was particularly astonishing as Beiranvand initially dove to intercept a cross from Kevin De Bruyne but then, while scrambling on the ground, used his left glove to block Maxim De Cuyper’s shot.

Should Iran progress to the Round of 32, they will undoubtedly reflect on Beiranvand’s extraordinary intervention. De Bruyne had his moments of brilliance, including a stunning play where he controlled Leandro Trossard’s pass beautifully on the byline. Beiranvand’s commitment to thwart De Bruyne’s delivery to Romelu Lukaku showcased his determination. Ultimately, Ali Nemati managed to stop the cross just as Beiranvand denied De Cuyper, instilling a sense of belief within the Iranian squad. Conversely, Belgium, having faced elimination in the group stage four years prior, finds itself in a precarious position.

During their previous visit to this stadium, after their Group G opener against New Zealand, Iran was not only asked to leave but also informed they could not stay overnight, forcing them to return to their base in Tijuana, Mexico.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with the Iranian team to address their concerns. Amid a plea for further assistance from head coach Amir Ghalenoei, Infantino humorously mentioned that he could step in to play forward against Belgium, who struggled to find their footing in the attacking third. Iran’s recent trip to Los Angeles just a day before the match, due to restrictions on their arrival, exemplifies what they perceive as mistreatment, reinforcing their claim of being the tournament’s most oppressed team.

Ghalenoei expressed that their training was significantly hindered, having practiced only half as much as intended due to their delayed arrival in Tijuana, compounded by 11 officials being denied entry into the United States and the logistical burden of commuting from Mexico for their matches.

Adding to their challenges, the tensions between Iran and co-hosts USA resurfaced just 40 minutes before kickoff. The Iranian football federation accused US Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, of spreading falsehoods regarding a federation member being barred from boarding their flight to Los Angeles due to alleged connections with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The FFIRI claimed that “fabricated statements have been made with the aim of damaging the reputation of Iranian football and disrupting the national team’s participation” in the World Cup.

Belgium faced their own set of challenges, as winger Jérémy Doku was absent, reportedly on antibiotics following an illness that worsened after their opening draw with Egypt in Seattle. Rudi Garcia made four changes to the lineup, with Lukaku replacing Charles De Ketelaere in the forward position. Lukaku’s earlier substitution had played a critical role in Belgium’s equalizer last time, causing an own goal from Mohamed Hany. Just minutes into the match, Lukaku attempted to connect with De Bruyne’s cross but was cautioned for inadvertently colliding with Beiranvand.

Lukaku’s starting role came as a surprise considering his limited playtime last season due to hamstring injuries, having last started for club or country in Belgium’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Wales more than a year ago. His presence kept Iran’s defenders alert, yet Beiranvand’s first significant save was to deny a shot from De Bruyne, followed by blocking a rebound attempt from De Cuyper, who was also brought into the starting eleven.

Thibaut Courtois was quick to stop a bouncing shot from Hossein Kanaanizadegan, and halfway through the first half, Taremi almost found the net with a well-placed shot, reminiscent of Wout Weghorst’s goal against Argentina four years ago; however, the effort was disallowed for offside after a clever free-kick routine initiated by Ehsan Hajsafi. The ball appeared to have beaten Courtois in slow motion, but a VAR review confirmed Taremi’s offside position.

Courtois instinctively saved a powerful effort from Taremi following a long throw by Iran, but the standout moment came from Beiranvand as he miraculously saved De Cuyper’s close-range shot after Nemati initially managed to halt De Bruyne’s cross. A large screen displayed the statistics, showing Belgium with 15 shots compared to Iran’s four. Just minutes later, the dynamic shifted when Belgium’s Nathan Ngoy was sent off for bringing down Taremi in an attempt to rectify a previous poor pass.

Belgium appeared shaken, their usually composed players now struggling. De Bruyne lost possession deep in his half, setting Saeid Ezatolahi up for a powerful shot on target. Yet, Beiranvand was not finished, remaining alert to thwart another attempt from De Cuyper as stoppage time approached.
